| Two years old! |
[Nov. 9th, 2009|01:38 pm] |
Mica turned two on Saturday. It's hard to believe how fast he's grown, and how far he has come from the little baby he was just two years ago. It is also a little tragic how infrequently I've posted about his milestones, so here's a little snapshot of Mica, age two.

| Question Time: Parallel play |
[Nov. 6th, 2009|01:36 pm] |
Can you remember the best toy you ever had? Conversely, can you remember the worst toy you ever had?
My favorite plaything I can remember (this harks back to the early/mid 1970s) was an army man action figure of molded plastic with movable arms and waist that was about 4 inches high: more flexible and detailed than the old school green army men, but more compact than the 12-inch, bearded* GI Joes of the time. I don't remember the brand name. My impression is that when I was in college, the GI Joe line expanded to include action figures of this type. I also liked Snap-Together models of dinosaurs and movie monsters.
I haven't quite figured on my least favorite, but I vividly remember Green Slime, a viscous blob that came in a plastic trashcan. It was kind of cool in an icky way, and my army man could fight it like a giant alien amoeba, but the trouble was that crap would get stuck to it, so it would go from fun-gross to gross-gross, matted with crumbs, animal fur, carpet fibers and other household detritus.
* Were beards ever common with G.I.s in real life? It seems kind of strange in retrospect.

| Quote of the day, from Anthony Lane's review of 'Precious.' |
[Nov. 4th, 2009|10:39 pm] |
|
"Please make sure, when you buy a ticket for “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” to pronounce the title in full. I know you will. There was a plan to call it “Push,” until another movie got there first. But why not call the new one “Precious,” and leave it at that? After all, Deborah Kerr didn’t star in “The Innocents: Based on the Novella ‘The Turn of the Screw’ by Henry James,” and Dustin Hoffman didn’t star in “Rain Man: Based on the Overwhelming Desire to Win an Academy Award by Dustin Hoffman,” so why the change in rubric?" |
